Founders’ Roots Bring Them Back to Barry Farms Community
SPRINGFIELD, VA—Interstate Worldwide Relocation Services continued its tradition of giving back to the community for its 16th consecutive year through the U.S. Marines Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program. Interstate employees collected, sorted, bagged, transported and delivered toys to children living in the Barry Farms Community in Southeast Washington, D.C. on Christmas Eve. Interstate distributed more than 2,000 toys and gifts to over 136 families and 600 children in the community. Its efforts have resulted in roughly 5,000 children being ensured of receiving a Christmas toy since the program’s inception. The Morrissette family, founders and owners of Interstate, have deep roots in Southeast Washington, D.C. having started the company there in 1943.
“Our entire family was born and raised in Southeast Washington. The Barry Farms Community was our neighbor for that period. Many of our employees have resided in the community at one point or another. The community has struggled over the years but the residents have been resilient. The ability for us to be able to spread a little joy to these children every year is an important part of our holiday season,” said Arthur E. (Buddy) Morrissette, Jr., president of Interstate.
Every year, Interstate works directly with the Barry Farms Resident Council in order to collect age-appropriate gifts for each child in participating families and delivers the gifts on Christmas Eve morning. Using doors rather than chimneys, dozens of Interstate employee volunteers play as Santa’s Elves on Christmas Eve – distributing toys with support from the DC Fire Department, DC Police Department, as well as the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.
“The excitement of the children makes this the best part of Christmas for many of us,” said Preston Charles, driver (and Santa) at Interstate. “Seeing their faces light up shows us all the true meaning of the holidays.”
In addition to the Barry Farms deliveries, Interstate aides the overall toy collection for the Toys for Tots program by providing moving trailers at sites throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area, as well as at the Interstate corporate headquarters in Springfield, VA.
