Stedroy Francis, an Interstate Worldwide Relocation contract driver, spoke last week at Bristow Run Elementary School in Prince William County. It was Career Day at Bristow Run, home of the Panthers, and parents were lined up outside the 2nd grade classroom to discuss their professions. Francis arrived, juggling boxes and bags of goodies for the kids.
As Francis handed out atlases, rulers and pens to the children, he described his occupation as being the most exciting job there could be. "I get to travel around America and meet new people everyday," he said. "What could be better?" When he asked if there were any questions, hands shot up in the air and started waving around, while students anxiously waited to be called on.
"Have you ever been to California?" one bright-eyed young lady asked. "Yes," replied Francis. The children continued to ask him if he had been to different states around the U.S., and Francis politely answered, "Yes" to every one of them.
"It was my pleasure to be able to speak to my daughter's class, and let other students learn more about my career. I hope that one day some of them will also become drivers," Francis stated. "It's been an enjoyable career for me."
Interstate Worldwide Relocation participates in a number of the School-Business Partnerships throughout Fairfax County. Through these partnerships with local elementary, middle and high schools, Interstate also participates in the "Trucker Buddy" program. The program started in 1998 as a geography lesson for students. The participating schools donate a stuffed animal to one of Interstate's long distance drivers; it then accompanies the driver throughout his cross-country journeys making deliveries. The students track the driver's route and correspond via e-mail and postcards to determine the status of the stuffed animals location. Math and geography lessons result - as the students determine the driver's destination or how far the driver traveled on a tank of gas.
Established in 1943 and headquartered in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, the Interstate family of companies today comprises a worldwide group of relocation management, transportation and logistic entities. With three facilities in the metro area and over 300 employees, the Interstate team has been learning and building on its reputation for providing "Top Hat Service." Interstate's experience and attention to details contributed to Interstate receiving ISO 9001:2000 certification for all entities and all facilities.
